Abstract - Imagery which departs from representational accuracy.
Acrylic - Paint first used in the 1940's. It is very versatile and can be used on almost any surface and has the brilliance and depth of watercolor and oil paints.
Bonded Bronze - A combination of resin and powdered bronze. When the mixture is poured into the mold, the bronze comes to the outside and leaves a coating of 1/16 of an inch of bronze.
Etching - A process in which an etching needle is used to draw into a surface. Ink is then forced into the etched depressions.
Figurative - Any painting of the human figure.
Giclee - French for "sprayed ink". A sophisticated print making process.
Gouache - A heavy opaque watercolor paint.
Impressionism - This style of art originated in the 1800's. It was the interpretation of the transient effects of reflected sunlight and color on the subject. The result of this creates movement and light in the painting.
Lithography - The art process of printing from a flat stone or plate. A design is drawn into the surface with a greasy crayon, and water and ink are then applied. The ink sticks to the greasy print only. The plate is then covered with paper and put through a press.
Mixed Aqua Media - A mixed media that is completely water based.
Mixed Media - A technique involving the use of two or more artistic media combined into one composition.
Pastel - Pigments are mixed with gum and pressed into a stick form to be used as crayons.
Pop Art - A style that was born in the 1950's. It incorporates the hard edge and flat color of commercial art. These images are culled from modern culture, advertising, and photography.
Primitivism - A contemporary style of art which is influenced by prehistoric and non-western cultures. Africa, South America, and Eastern civilizations are the most influential.
Realism - A style that depicts the subject matter more in its natural state with not as much attention to detail. The painting is usually done rapidly to reveal spontaneity.
Surrealism - A twentieth century avant-garde movement. Surrealists' works have a realistic though irrational style, similar to a dream-like state.
Tempera - A process involving an emulsion of oil and water. It was used before oil colors were invented. Traditionally, it was created with an egg emulsion in which the pigments of color were mixed.
Watercolor - Pigments or colored matter that is mixed with water to create paint.
